The Men Behind the Work: How Our Crew is Growing More Than Just Lawns
Discover how the crew at Landscaping Unlimited goes beyond mowing lawns, building pride, brotherhood, and blue-collar careers. Listen in on The Landscaping Podcast.

If you drive by one of our job sites at Landscaping Unlimited, you’ll see machines, trucks, and men moving with purpose.

What you won’t see at first glance is the thing we care about most:

The way those men are growing, individually and together, while they build something for someone else.

Our company isn’t a place where guys show up, survive eight hours, and drag themselves home.

For us, landscaping/blue-collar work is not a punishment; it's a career path that requires intelligence, strength, creativity, and passion.

This piece is a story about the team behind the tools, and what we’re really doing out there every day.

More Than “Just Landscaping

People hear the word “landscaper” and think:

  1. Grass cutting
  2. Leaf blowing
  3. Trimming shrubs

We know better.

Our team is managing a range of challenges, including grading, water flow, load, stone, equipment, safety, project management, and client expectations, all of which they juggle simultaneously in their mind while performing manual labor.

Hardscaping and landscaping sit alongside the tradespeople already respected in society, such as electricians, mechanics, and plumbers...

Here at Landscaping Unlimited, we solve real problems that impact how a property looks, functions, and retains its value and yet, culturally, landscaping is often treated as the “less serious” trade.

We don’t accept that.

Inside our company, we talk about the craft with the same seriousness you’d expect in any skilled trade shop:

  • Is this the most efficient way?
  • Are we doing this the safest way?
  • Does this result meet our standard or just the minimum requirement?

Those questions matter because the work is a reflection of the men doing it, and while we want our crew to go home tired from their honest work, we also want them to go home filled with pride.

The Culture on the Crew

If you spent a day riding with us, you’d notice something about how the team interacts...

New guys aren’t just thrown a string trimmer and told, “Have at it.” Someone walks them through the equipment, explaining why we edge a certain way, why we protect a particular tree line, and why we take an extra five minutes to clean up a site before leaving.

Corrections happen, but they’re not about ego, they’re about standards:

  • “Hey, that line is a little off, let’s straighten it up.”
  • “Double-check that grade before we set the next row.”
  • “Blow that driveway again; the homeowner is going to see that first.”

It’s not micromanaging, it’s holding each other accountable.

We all know what it feels like to work somewhere you’re invisible; places where you show up, punch in, keep your head down, hoping no one notices you.

That’s the opposite of what we want here, as we want our team members to be recognized, their efforts to be noticed, and their improvements to be acknowledged and appreciated.

It's why we run our social media the way we do; we want our story to be told, and "our story" is the story written by the men wearing 'Landscaping Unlimited' on their backs.

Our leader and company owner, Shay Brickhouse, knows that when a person sees their work matters and someone is paying attention, they start raising their own standards. So, Shay has made this a core pillar of how this business is run. Landscaping is a people business, and that's not just the people we serve, but those within who dedicate themselves to the craft of Landscaping and Hardscape work.

Growth Isn’t Just Physical

Landscaping is physical; there’s no way around that.

You’re lifting, raking, hauling, digging, stacking blocks, pushing wheelbarrows, running machines, etc...

There’s sweat, soreness, long, hot days where it would be easy to check out mentally and do the bare minimum, which is exactly where having the right mindset comes in.

We talk openly as a team about:

  • Attitude: What you bring to the job when you step out of the truck.
  • Ownership: Nobody says “that’s not my job” when something needs to be done; we want employees with the mindset of an owner.
  • Pride: Taking the extra step even when nobody’s watching

Those aren’t just buzzwords to us, they’re daily decisions.

When men choose to lean in instead of coasting, they aren’t just becoming better employees; they're becoming more capable men, someone who can lead, take initiative, and carry responsibility in their life outside of work, too.

We’ve seen it:

  • Younger crew members grow into leaders and start training others.
  • Quiet guys find their voice when it’s time to speak up about change or concerns.
  • Men who used to “just work a job” begin thinking long-term about certifications, licenses, bigger roles, and future opportunities.

That’s the atmosphere we’re trying to build; one where blue-collar men are encouraged to grow, and not just stay at a level because it's comfortable.

Showing the World How We Operate: The Landscaping Podcast

Most of this could remain private, as it's something our team experiences on job sites and in the shop.

However, we believe our industry deserves more attention and respect, and we want people to understand what goes into this work and our culture; That’s why we started The Landscaping Podcast, powered by Landscaping Unlimited.

On the podcast, we open the doors and let people in:

  • We discuss the realities of building and operating a landscaping and hardscaping company.
  • We share the lessons we’re learning about leadership, business, family, faith, and blue-collar life.
  • We discuss the mistakes we’ve made and what we’re doing differently now.
  • We highlight what makes this trade a real career path, and not just a summer job.

If you want to understand who we are beyond the trucks and logos, the podcast is where you’ll hear it unfiltered.

A Trade Worth Taking Pride In

We believe landscaping and hardscaping should sit at the same table as the other respected trades.

  • Electricians keep the lights on.
  • Plumbers keep water where it belongs.
  • Mechanics keep all the engines running.

We (Landscapers/Hardscapers):

  • Put our hands on every house, business, and building in the country.
  • Create outdoor spaces where families gather, kids play, and memories are made.
  • Protect and enhance property value through thoughtful design, meticulous maintenance, and proactive long-term care.
  • Maintain properties' functionality and safety by addressing erosion, drainage, and grading issues.

That matters.

And when the work matters, the men who do it matter.

We want homeowners to see that when they hire us, they’re not just hiring a crew to mow grass, move dirt, or lay bricks; They’re hiring a team that takes pride in their property and in themselves.

We also want young men who are searching for direction to view this industry as a viable option, a place where they can develop a skill set, earn respect, and grow into someone their family can depend on.

The Bottom Line

At Landscaping Unlimited, we not only build patios, walls, and drainage systems, but we also create beautiful lawns, and behind every project, there’s a team of men pushing themselves and each other to grow:

  • In skill
  • In mindset
  • In character

We’re not interested in being just another company where employees tolerate their work until Friday...

We’re building something different; A place where blue-collar men can take pride in what they do, how they do it, and who they’re becoming along the way.

If you’re a homeowner, we hope you feel that when you see your property after we’re done with it. We aim to leave you with as positive an impression of our crew as you feel joy about your property.

If you’re someone thinking about getting into this line of work, we hope you’ll listen to The Landscaping Podcast, watch what we’re doing, and realize:

  1. You don’t have to settle for a job you resent.
  2. You can work with your hands, earn a living, and grow as a man, all at the same time.

That’s what we’re chasing every day, one project, and one crew member at a time.

Lastly, we're always hiring the right candidate, if that's you, SEND US YOUR RESUME.
