Turning Dirt into Discovery: How Landscaping Unlimited Inc. Built an Outdoor Classroom for the Next Generation of Thinkers

At Landscaping Unlimited Inc., we’re not just about mowing lawns and trimming hedges—we’re about building meaningful spaces that serve a purpose.

One of our proudest recent projects was the design and construction of a fully custom outdoor classroom at Northeast Elementary School in Pinetown, NC.

A Vision Rooted in Education

When Northeast school officials approached us with the idea of creating an outdoor learning space, we didn’t just see a landscaping project; we saw an opportunity to shape the future.

This wasn’t about flower beds and grass; it was about building a space where curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking could grow.

Our mission was to transform a previously empty, muddy patch of land in the center of the school grounds into a safe, inspiring, and functional outdoor classroom that would serve students for years to come.

From Concept to Construction

The project included:

Natural seating areas are arranged so that all students can see both the teacher and the board, regardless of their seating position.
A central teaching board made from sustainable wood, and all-weather "writing blackboard" material.
A concrete path leads to the tables under the canopy, where a level concrete pad was poured.
Rocks that are easy to walk on help with drainage, and French drains were installed to prevent water collection in the area.
Durable, low-maintenance landscaping to minimize upkeep, yet maintain a beautiful aesthetic.

Every inch of the space was designed to promote focus, connection with nature, and hands-on discovery.

This classroom is still in use today, and students love learning under the sun.
