Lessons from the Latest Episodes of The Landscaping Podcast

Every week, Shay and I sit behind the mics to talk about what’s happening in the landscaping world; we're not talking theories or only sharing highlight reels, we're bringing real lessons from the field.

Our two most recent episodes capture what this company stands for: growth, grit, and a better way of doing business.

Here’s the breakdown...

EQUIP EXPO: IT’S BIGGER THAN EQUIPMENT

When Shay and I hit the floor at Equip Expo, it wasn’t just to check out shiny new gear. Yeah, we saw incredible machines and cutting-edge tech, but the mindset of these company owners and leaders in the Green Industry hit us the hardest.

This trip reminded us that leadership, culture, and clarity of purpose drive growth more than any mower or mini skid ever will.

Shay broke it down perfectly: Leadership isn’t about barking orders; it’s about giving your crew direction they can believe in.

My focus: How storytelling ties it all together. The way we show up online, in our community, and even on-site, that’s our brand. And if we don’t tell our story, nobody will know why we do what we do, to the level that we do it.

Inspiration is useless if it doesn’t lead to action; you can walk through an expo, attend a conference, or scroll social media all day long, but unless you apply what you learn, you’re just collecting noise.

HIRING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Episode 007 hits close to home for every business owner in the trades. Finding good help is tough, everyone says it, but few do something about it.

Shay’s perspective?

"Stop looking for 'experienced landscapers' and start looking for good people."

We have learned that great hires come from different backgrounds, such as mechanics, warehouse workers, and even teachers, because they bring fresh eyes and a willingness to learn.

You can teach someone to lay pavers or run a zero-turn; you can’t teach work ethic, pride, and heart.

As a leader in the Green Industry, your job is to build an environment where new people can grow fast and feel supported; you do that by giving them clear direction, holding them accountable, and celebrating their wins.

If hiring, rewrite your job description to focus on attitude over experience.

HOW IT ALL CONNECTS

These two episodes tie together perfectly:

  • Equip Expo taught us the value of vision and culture.
  • Hiring Non-Landscapers showed us the power of people and perspective.

Together, they’re the formula: Vision + Story + People = Growth.

At Landscaping Unlimited, that’s the mission.

We’re not just building yards; we’re creating leaders and showing what’s possible when you care about the people, not just the product.

WHERE WE’RE HEADED

If you’re following our journey, you’ll see more of this in every post, every podcast, and every project we take on.

We’re bringing new ideas home from events like Equip Expo and turning them into tangible results, better service for clients, a stronger culture for our crew, and more opportunities for the next generation behind us in this wonderful industry.
